Single Breed Females or Crossbreds

Would it be better to have a set of purebred commercials females of say Red Angus and then cross them with a continental whenever you didn't have enough room for more females? Or would it be better to cross those females with another maternal breed and produce crossbred females and then cross the females with a continental breed for a terminal mating? My first instincts are to get to having all crossbred females, but I heard someone say differently.
 
On our commercial Red Angus cows we use a Gelbvieh or Simmenthal bull and then use a Hereford on the resulting females.
