Simmental / Brangus

We've been raising simmentals for the last few years. When we bought our first cows, our neighbors told us that simmentals take a beating at our areas sales rings. Call me hardheaded but after selling calves and watching what sells best, I'm ready to concede the fact.

Question: What do ya'll think about putting a simmental bull (black) on brangus cows? OK, I still hardheaded enough to want a simmental bull. I appreciate any and all input on this before I make a move.

What type or breed of cattle on average sells for top dollar in your area? Heavy angus influenced cattle sell best in my area. Straight simmi's sell for less since they finish to big for local feeders markets. If you have good simmi cows how about a using a brangus bull on them? Just remember you need to supply the buyer with what they want to get the best money.

Thanks Pat for the quick response. Angus influenced, Brahman ear, Solid colors, especially black or red, seem to best in our area.

I'm as hardheaded as you I have the same idea of yours, Simmental-Brangus cross works great in our area too, at least in the feedlots I'm selling mines, but I'm beganing to use Red Brangus. I'm also crossbreeding Simbrah-Red Brangus. English-Continental with Brahman influence is a great three-way crossbreed and it's better using Nelores that will give less ear.

We've use the sim-brangus cross before just like you described. Sim-bull brangus-cows. They were pretty good calves, the only problem I had with the cross was that the calves were rather large at birth. It could of been the bull but the calves were just a little too large for me so we changed bulls.

Since you want to loose the spots, make sure that the Brangus isn't a bred up deal with some kind of Heinz 57 in it's background. You need to be sure tht there isn't a misc. spotting gene floating around somewhere. If it's a real Brangus it will nock 99% or better of the spots off the calves

When dad was experimenting with various continental crosses he had the best luck with simmi or gelbveigh angus crosses. I am slowly moving the our herd to registered black angus. I would select the type of cattle by what the buyers want and the enviroment will support.

I'm trying this cross also. I'm expecting my first calves in October 2003. I have a feeling they'll be good calves.
