I need some help? It got cold here last night around 0 degrees. We have 3 calves about 1 1/2 weeks old. We went out to feed this morning and one couldn't hardly get up. When he finally did, we got him to eat and gave him a shot of antibotics the vet gave us. We also gave him a bottle of electrolytes this afternoon,he also ate that fine. We had a heat lamp on him and plenty of hay around him. He just seems worn down or something. I was wandering is there anything else to do for him and is it likely he will live. Thanks

TRY MYCOTIL AND BAYTRIL COMBO. WORKS GOOD FOR PNEMONIA. ALSO I'D KEEP GIVING HIM THE ELECTROLITES AND MILK REPLACER. IF HE STOPS TAKING THE BOTTLE YOU WILL HAVE TO DRENCH HIM. GOOD LUCK!!> I need some help? It got cold here

In very cold weather calves require a higher fat content in the nilk then. Fat is more important then protein at his point.

I know sound stupid,But how do we go about that. We are feeding them powdered calf milk. What else should we give him to make up the difference. We are worried about him,not just a little money lost if he dies,I hate to see an animal sick and nothing I do helps it.We have lost a few this year already, but not from us trying. And also, if he gets where he doesn't eat can we still save a baby calf by drenching him. Thanks your info helps

I don't know of specific brands, and you never drench a young alf. Feed with an esophogeal(sp) feeder if it can't/won't suck. The following links deal with milk replacer quality.

Thanks for the info all, but it's too late calf died this morning before we got to him

Salebarn or other infected calves break with viral scours by day 7 and can suffer from secondary by day 10. Coccidia and salmonella can be lifethreatening quickly. If you are still raising calves, email me for some free advice.
