How do I put more weight on my show steers. I have 2 herefored cross. I dont know what they weight right now. In Novermber One weighed 475 and the other weighted 495. I want to put more weight on them but not FAT. HELP...

what are you feeding them? If you are feeding them a whole corn mix, such as I am I would increase how much they get per day. But if not, you might want to contact an extinson office worker to ask them or a specialist or your 4-h club leader.

if you want weight but not fat i would also add 2lbs of oats on top of there feed

What Karlton means to say is cut back your current feed by two pounds, and substitute two pounds of whole or steam rolled oats. The weight won't go on quite as fast simply because you are cutting back the fat. Send me a PM for another idea.

I am feeding them all-purpose 20%. They get a 5 galloon bucket in the morning and one in the evening. And they get like 5 tuna cans of corn meal on their feed. I have them in a acre pasture. So I dump feed into a trough and they eat what they eat.

Depending on the type of feed, a 5 gallon bucket often holds right around 20lbs -- so you're feeding 40lbs to 2 calves every day?

IMO the first order of business is to find out what they weigh now.

Let's round the numbers a little, and say they were 500lbs in November, which was about 200 days ago. With a 2lb gain they could be 900lbs right now, but there's no way to know for sure without weighing them. They could well be heavier, in which case putting fat cover on them isn't such a bad idea. There comes a point when you want fat and not frame.

At the very least, use a weight tape and get a general idea of where they are. We can't give you good advice about what to feed and how much if we haven't any idea what they weigh. If they're 700lbs, you'd feed them differently than if they turn out to be 1100lbs.

When is there show?? If you still wan't them to grow try a good brand of show feed. Like ACCO, Hi-Pro, SHOW Chow, MoorMAN's are all good one's. Take to the sales rep and see what fit's you and them best. Good Luck

the fair is in July. The third week. Showmanship on monday the 16, show on tuesday the 17 and then saturday the 21 is open class. AND check in is on Sunday the 15 from10-3. then weighting starts at 3. we can't feed or water them past noon on sunday.
