Show Steer 2025

Help Support CattleToday:

That's a new one.
Unfortunately 90% of the sale is politics. At least around here.
If a kid's dad farms 10,000 acres his fertilizer rep and banker will drive the price of the animal through the roof just to try to keep business.

But if a kid's parents have no ties to Ag it's hard to compete.

Or even worse if someone close in your family did something horrible you can just forget it.
A young man who's dad had a big hand in the closing of the local sale barn where I used to work. The dad ended up spending a couple years in federal prison over it. The young man was just a baby at the time.
He got reserve champion market barrow last year at the 4H show. They couldn't get a bid on his hog in the sale. The auctioneer ended up buying it just to keep the sale going.
Unfortunately it's all about your last name.
Odd, it's just standard procedure here. Obviously some kids do better than others because of their parents, that's just the reality of an auction. But the sale isn't a competition here, the kids get what they get and move on.

Hello everyone!
I will be picking out my calf in November, so in a month😬. I need to do a deep clean of the barn, build a pig pen for my mom, fix the stall that we had a show pig in so I can get it ready for my moms milking cow, and get things ready for my steer. So yah I have a lot to do yaayyyy. If you guys know a good feed for show calf's it would be super helpful if you can share it. I'm also still looking for a clipping chute and a blower for a good price. That's my little update I'd be happy to answer any questions you guys have, drive safe and have a wonderful day!

Reprehensible, but very true...

Does your4H group not own a clipping chute? When I was your age it was a big deal for all the kids to bring their animal to one place that had a chute and the instructor or a experienced parent would teach you how to clip while you did it. This was usually a few weeks before show day. After that, most kids touched them up at the show barn the day before the event.

Hi sorry for not responding sooner I was at work. Yes my 4H has been looking for one I don't know if we have one yet though. So if I can't find one used and my club has one I will just borrow it for the season. My parents want one that is just ours so we can milk a cow that where getting.

Hello! Ok so I just had my first beef meeting in Monday and it went really well! Fitting chute wise I did end up finding one on Facebook near my aunts house and I'm going over there this weekend, so my mom is going to message the seller and try to haggle it's $1000 and in super good condition. My club also has 2 chutes to share but we need one at home for my mom's milking cow. My parents also found grass hay for $10 per bale so we will be stocking up on that. I added up the costs for me and it would be about 4k for everything to be brand new, i will be looking for some used stuff to save money. I will also start posting videos on my family's homesteading Facebook and instagram page about my progress (I got permission from my mom) so I will post a link to that soon. I'm so excited for this next year and to share it all with you! As always I love getting tips from you all, as well as name ideas! I will post soon I hope you all have a wonderful day! Drive safely!

Keep in mind, you don't need everything for showing at the county fair. Honestly, the chute is near the bottom of the "need" list. My kids have shown for about 5 years and still don't have one. There's no need for it at home, and at the fair there are enough within our group that there's always one or two open on show day. Most important things we've found are a good place to wash daily without creating a mud hole, and a blower. Of course a handful of combs/brushes as well. We don't even have a real show box. It can be done without spending thousands of dollars.

Two 4-5ft posts 30" apart and about 30-36" back from the tie point work just as good as any chute. We bought numerous different chutes over the years and the only one still around is the first one we bought in '98 which is a Sullivans steel unit. We either use fitters guards or straight up bars at the shows. Beside the old steel chute is a powder river head gate with two poles with 3 slots on each side to change pole position for different size calves. Depending on your project length and what climate you're in, a fan or two and a good blower will be 100 times more useful that a clipping chute.

I have noticed similar things with Farm Bureau and Cattlemen's association's college scholarships. The kids of board members get a lot of scholarships. It seems unbecoming for people who presumably have means to accept charity.

Hello everyone! So sorry to keep you waiting for an update, that's on me. Now I did find a steer, I have two to choose from and they both look really good from what I see. I will add some pictures as well, I'd love to hear your thoughts on which one I get. Yesterday I went to Reno NV with some friends of mine to watch a Hereford cattle show and I learned a ton about showmanship! Also on a little side note I'm going to test for my driving permit on the 16th yay! I'm going to chat with my mom today about when we can go to pick up my steer, so once I get an answer on that I will let you all know. As always have a wonderful day, stay safe and happy holidays!!

Yes actually I was doing it for fun last spring 😅
Great! I do it for fun, too.

I use YouCut and CapCut for video editing. I usually them my clips and put them together in YouCut (because it's a more simple interface) then export it with no sound to finish it in CapCut with transitions, effects, captions, and sound/ voice over (because it's more robust). I run all of my audio through Noise Reducer by Inverse Al to get rid of background noise and filler words (I say "Um" a lot when I record voiceovers). And if I need a theme song or music, I use Donna Al Music maker. I just type what I want the song to be about and pick a style and genre... Donna makes the complete song. It was a GREAT app, but it's not as wonderful lately. Still works, though.

If I just need something quick and simple, I use one of the awesome templates in CapCut.

My results are on my TikTok if you want to look. @spottedheiferranch

Wow thanks so much for the tips! I've been using Canva because my mom has premium on it, i have tried CapCut but it didn't have what I was looking for, which is a bummer. Thanks again!
