So I have a calf with signs of pneumonia. I gave him duramycin. It is supposed to be an intramuscular…I think I put the shot more in the jugular. Should I give him more or just wait? I am new to this by the way!

Which Duramycin did you use? The two formulations I'm familiar with are both labeled for IV use with one (100) only for IV. So I would not redose. If you think you hit the jugular you are way off in your placement.

If you are new to cattle, welcome. I suggest getting a demonstration from a vet about injection placement ( you need a vet relationship anyway) and taking a beef quality assurance (BQA) course. This can be done online.

@redcowsrule33 , Great advice.
Why do you think you gave it in the jugular?
Don't give it any more.
Most antibiotics are sub-Q shots. If all you have is 1" needles. Pull the animals hide away from their neck and insert the needle at more of a 45* than a 90.

That one according to the website is SQ, IV, or IM. Look at the expiration on that bottle, it may be short. That antibiotic was changed to prescription only over a year ago but it is still legal to sell over the counter if it has the old labeling.

Ok…so I wasn't too off in my placement. The cow is eating fine, drinking water, and is no more lazy than before. Just has a cough and milky nasal discharge

Give the calf some Nuflor or Draxxin. You should be able to get a shot from the vets office. Follw @redcowsrule33 advice on shot placement. They started selling a generic Draxxin we haven't tried it but I belive it's about 2/3rd the price.

The problem is..:I can't get a vet to come out for another two weeks and you need a RX for draxxin.

Our vet will sell us however many cc's we need in a syring for us to administer. You might call or go to the office with a pic of the calf and the symptoms. If it has a respite problem 2 weeks is 2 weeks too long.

I use that for footrot. I always use subQ but repeat in two days as per label. If you give IM you have to repeat the next day. This stuff gives some wicked site reaction swelling so I break the dose up, tent the skin as suggested and move it all over the neck beyond what's in the pic.

For pneumonia I use Nuflor
