Shelter for calves or cows

I have been told by a few people that is is better to leave all your stock out. Not to let them have access to a barn. I would think that letting a mother and calf in would be better for the calf. Could someone give me some input on this? Thanks.

It really depends on the weather. If it's cold and wet, shelter will be very beneficial to the cow and calf. If it's nice, even if it's cold, they don't need more than a wind break and bedding. If it's too warm bugs can accumulate in a barn and cause scours in calves. Common sence is the best bet. Cattle need to be dry and well fed then they can cope with cold weather.
Jason Trowbridge
Southern Angus Farms
Alberta Canada
