I have a question for you Angus breeders out there. I am looking for an Angus bull to Ai some of my Gelbvieh cows. One of the things I really want to do is raise the marbling numbers on the offspring. This bull looks like he has marbling EPD's to burn. I don't claim to be real good at reading Angus epd's so I could use a little help here.

I am primarily looking to raise some good Balancer bulls and he looks like he compliments the GV's real well. I am also very impressed with his growth numbers.

What if anything would be a downside on this bull?

3 way-

In my opinion, you have hit a winner with this bull. His EPD's are all good, with the exception of REA, and that can be brought up with your Gelbvieh cows and your NEXT bull on your retained heifers. It is pretty tough to get every EPD duck in a row at the same time, and this guy is pretty close to doing that. His Accurcies are high enough to bank on what his progeny will turn out to be.

His phenotype is good for almost every characteristic, with perhaps the exception being a slightly pinched heart girth, and he could benefit with a little more bone, but that is characteristic of angus, and is one reason Angus nicks well with Gelbvieh.

You could certainly do a lot worse than this guy!

I wouldn't use him. His ribeye EPD is terrible, even worse than his sire. If you want to use an ABS bull, take a look at this one

He has many of the same traits as Shear Force, but a much, much better ribeye EPD. IMO, both of them have too much backfat, but your Continental influence should help that.

We just ordered semen on this young bull for heifers:

Frankie,
If I were you I would not use Analyst a whole lot this spring. The ABS website is down but I think they suspended sales of Analyst, until more genetic testing is completed.

I was able to get the website up. And he's listed in their online beef directory, but that's interesting information. We weren't going to use him, I just picked him out as one alternative to Shear Force. I have seen some of his sons and liked what I saw, especially considering he's a heifer bull. I did find this link:

Frankie,
The links you provided are working now. Just FYI the "young bull" you listed as breeding to heifers is 9 years old. I think you will be happy with the calves you get out of Connection. I know I have been, used him again this year.

It's good to hear from someone who's actually used a bull. I guess "young" is the wrong word to use. We'll use a younger (age) bull if his accuracies get up there quickly and ignore an older (age) bull if they don't. Connection's accuracies are just starting to get where we consider using them. YW accuracy is still below .90. And there are so many Angus bulls available. :?

It is just like the Origen catalog says it is, good foot and leg structure, super dispositions, nice depth of heel. He will make nice, deep, cowy looking females. I am breeding him to cows I want to retain daughters of due to the disposition and the reduced mature size.

3Way,

The only negative I see to Shear Force is his sire's (Prime Time) progeny dont shed very well. You probably dont have any concerns about that in CO. Thought I would let you know. Other than that I see nothing wrong with him.
