I enjoy looking at everyone's pictures, so I wanted to share a few of my own. I certainly don't have as many to share as most here, as I'm just slowly getting the family farm back into some sort of production. After 15-20 years without cattle, fences are my main project. I'm not willing to go into debt for cattle, so I'm just adding a little at a time. Right now I just have 4 pairs and the bull. Feel free to make any comments, as I'm under no delusions as to what they are, plain old "black" commercial cows. I just had the bull delivered last Thursday and I only paid kill price for him from a friend looking to get a new bull, so you won't hurt my feelings. :D I believe he's around 4 years old, no more than 5. Some of the cow/calf pics are a couple months old.

The obligatory butt shot.

I am impresses. The only thing i would fix is the fly problem. Your calves are really nice. How old are the calves?

Thanks. I agree on the flies, they're driving the cows, and me, crazy. I sprayed them again last night. They have a rub (with face flaps) that they walk through multiple times a day, but it seems like spraying is the only way I can keep them down. Then it rains and I have to do it again. The calves vary in age a little. The two largest were born in late Feb, one in early April, and the baldy in mid May. They're spread out because I just put the group together in the last year. Next year I would hope for things to be closer together, except for any additional cows I buy.

Cattle look good! Since our cows cool off in the pond everyday I use a pour on fly control Ultra Sabre that works real good.

M.Magis....Those are some nice calves you have there! I am about 2 hours away from you, near Morgantown WV, but over the line in Pa.
I am running a few shy of 100 head this year...I keep some extra stockers in the summer.
I am having good luck using a mineral in the summer with CTC and IGR.
I have had no pinkeye and the fly population is way down when I walk through my cattle.
Always had some pinkeye in the past...I blamed it on a neighbor that buys gobs of salebarn stockers every week to send west.
Good luck with your little herd!

I use the Magnum bluish purplish tags here. 1 in each ear for cow and 1 tag for each calf. Works good for about 5-6 months out of the year. Then if I see any still around I use a permitherin pour on for cow/calves.

Was wondering if the minerals with fly control in it really works if your neighbor does not use it on their cattle across the road.

I appreciate the comments. I know they're far from perfect, but it's nice to know I'm at least headed in the right direction. I picked up some pour on yesterday, we'll see how that works. It's interesting, some of the cows seem nearly covered in flies on some days, while other cows only have a handful.

Contact Kit Pharo. He says he selects for fly resistance. You could have a fortune on your hands there!

Well, one day after pouring them with Ultra Boss, and Im not sure I even saw one fly today. What a difference. I guess I'll have to wait to see how long it lasts, but I'm sure they have to be relieved for now.
The baldy calf was a bit of an accident. I traded for a young baldy bull last summer, to be this years butcher steer. He was fairly young and small at the time, so I ASSumed he couldn't reach the cows. Lesson learned. :)

Ive got a idea why, but its just that... not info ive read anywhere.. but blood surfaced they need to cool off on some. more than others. gives the flies a buffett some of them have a thicker hair coat..
