Sent 13 to the sale yesterday. All bull calves ranging from 350-650 lbs . Not that I wanted to send all of them but we are so dry ! 6 from one farm , 7 from the other . 6 baldies and 7 solid black . Prices are down some but these are good solid calves that should grow for whoever buys them . Only had 1 that got away , the Brahma calf . He would have won the gold in the high jump . Pressed him a little too much trying to sort out some heifers and he took out the top board as he went over the corral . 🤠

Fort Payne?

I need to fill mine back up after I clean it out.

Anyone have a good method to cleaning a fuel tank? Thought I'd waste 5 or 10 gallons and rinse it out thru the drain hole. Got some trash in it.

Also, do they do better when kept under cover? And what color do yall paint tanks, white?

I say yes on keeping under cover just because its out of the sun. The fuel tank will heat in the sun, even if on a tractor, and as it cools condensation of moisture gets going. Then you have water in the fuel.

Called the stockyard this morning because I won't get our checks till Friday or Saturday. Don't know what the calves brought individually but the 2 checks averaged a little over $1100 per calf . Prices definitely down but I had resolved that 1000 average would be good .

Got the check today ; take out the bottom pair it was closer to a $1200 ave . Had one baldie calf that was rough coated and not as big a frame as the rest . Really nice black calf , one of the biggest calves that had a spot in his eye from pinkeye. Both were $1000 .

You said 350-650 lbs. So using 500 as the mid way point in those two weights. 500 lb steers are $1,400-$1,500 so with the 50-60 cent deduct for being bulls that is about what they would bring here. Being a bull won't hurt the 350 lb calf much. A 650 lb bull sure wouldn't help your average price at all.

You are correct , black ave weight was 535 , baldie ave weight was 450 . Lightest baldie 385 , lightest black 350 but brought $3.10 a lb . Calf off a first calf heifer

I've got to pay more attention. But I don't think bull calves are that much discounted around here. I've not been paying attention to it, because I steer all mine.

One small sale I go to, I hear a lot of talk of no one owning a pocket knife. Maybe I'll buy a few today....

Got me thinking also.

The discount varies and follows the demand cycle. With the fall sell off going on right now and with a market that is somewhat weaker, the discount can be large. Big frame tall lanky thin bull calves with big nuts can make some real money with a knife, some wormer, a implant, vaccinations and some time.

This morning I read a report from a sale. Steers weighing 480 sold for $2.87. The only bulls listed (only 6 head) weighed 485 and sold for $2.30. We just don't have many bulls show up around here and that sale is further than I am going to drive for the off chance some bulls the right size show up. But I might have to keep my eyes open when at the sale. With the fires the availability of grass next summer is not looking good at this point. But at those prices I could just put them in the corral and feed until spring.
