Im looking at purchasing some semen from a shorthorn bull. They have advertised his semen as stud semen and also commercial semen. What is the difference between them? Is the better quality semen stud?

no, same product... they're just marketing to two different groups- the shorthorn breeders and the commercial cattle operations.

Here in the USA, some breeders/AI studs will sell semen at a discounted price to volume purchasers &/or commercial producers. Haven't seen this lately with anything other than Shorthorns, but , as brihop says, it's the same product, not lesser quality.

ABS still has discounts every year for volume buyers and there are some really good bulls involved, especially on the angus. Off-season is another good time to buy as there are quite a few good deals during the months where most people aren't breeding beef cattle.

And why wouldn't you buy or at least stock up when it's on special?
It's not like it'll expire in a good tank.

Talked to a custom collector and he said that semen is good for at least 30 years.
