I am about to sell a few heifers today. Have a few interested parties coming to look at them. I decided for the first time it was best for me to sell now rather than in spring as feeding through the winter is a killer. Both financially and in the mud and rain. They are 5 months old. Curious what you'd pay. Black Angus.2.jpg3.jpg4.jpg5.jpg6.jpg1.jpg7.jpg

5 months old?
They look nice!
400 pounders?

My guess would be 600+. They are big girls. 1/4 Holstein, 3/4 Angus but I sell as an "Angus" as they are pure black, no markings. 2 are 5 months one is 4 months old. I get some big calves. At least I think so...

I was going to see if I can get $1,000 each for them? Out to lunch?

I hauled some 750lb black angus/sim hfrs yesterday. $1.10/lb off the farm. I thought that was a little low, but the seller and the buyer both seemed happy. $1.25 - $1.35 would buy a lot of blk hfrs in this part of the country.

Thursday, October 8, 2020 - Special Feeder Sale

1714 cattle traded hands today with demand very good on the yearlings and moderate on the spring born calves! The sale featured 6 pot loads of steers and 6 pot loads of heifer., all in mostly very desirable conditon. softer, fleshier calves had fewer takers as most of our calf buyers are cutting beans!

Ok not far off. I am also in Canada where I tend to see higher prices paid than you guys do down South. I will see what I get!

I never sell by weight though. I posted at $1,000 a piece and got about 25 interested parties. Fingers crossed. I was surprised anyone would buy a calf this time of year. I sure wouldn't.

Great info thanks. Any idea what the ages were of those 750lbers?

If they are 5 mths. old and over 600# then that would be over 3 lbs. ADG figuring 100# BW. Not impossible I suppose and if they can reproduce that they might be worth $1,000. What were they eating? Is that about $750 in US? Would have a hard time getting that here even tho they look nice enough. Here ain't there so if you can get it good for you.

Yes about $750 USD but it doesn't really work like a straight exchange. Some buyers yesterday said "calves sure took a big hit last week" and my response is ok well then go to auction...

The response was good to the $1,000. My 4.5 month old one which is smaller is maybe going to have to stay longer for me to get that price.

I feed them hay and grain all year. Not a ton of grain but I start them on beef text as soon as they can fight there way into the grain feeder with their dams. They are 1/4 Holstein. That's where I think they get their size. Both from their frame and the fact their dams have an enormous milk supply.

I keep heifers for myself every other year. This is my year to sell. I have a few neighbors that know that. I single out my best 12-15, and sell them for $150 over market. Occasionally, I will deem 4 or 5 too nice to sell (look good, and out of my best cows). I don't feel like that's an unfair price, for a quality replacement heifer. I will actually background what I don't sell, and add $150 in value to them.

I like that system. I have had two years of only heifers. Not a single bull calf. Its been a different sale that's for sure.

I am keeping two of my heifers this year. Haven't kept one in 4 years. Yesterday I had a few offers on one of the 2 I planned to keep. I said I would sell her for $1,500 which is about $750 more than she is worth on the market but that is what she is worth to me.

I do some thing similar with the commercial type heifers as Big Foot. I never sell straight off the mom so I have some inputs in gathering them, culling through them, and getting them situated to sell. Plus, I have a little bit of a warranty on them. The auction barn deal doesn't fly with me either. Its usually more about this is what I will part with them for if not Im going to turn them out myself.

There are a few guys here who sell registered BA heifer calves every fall for U$S 1000 to 1100. I would not pay that. I did buy some grade sim angus heifer calves for a bit less, but had to quit after two years. I just don't tolerate high maintenance girls.

I am retaining a herd of select heifers this fall. That means I am willing to pay U$S 700.

Just got back from watching a few sell today. Might could get $1.00 today depending if the buyer can see the holstine. ....you'll have to do the currency exchange.
