seeding grass

My Dad and my Grandpa always mixed the brome seed in with the oats. The seed salesmen say that this is wrong (because it goes in too deep) but we always got a stand.
I tried (yes, I know I need to listen to Dad more) putting a mix containing medow brome through the grass seeder attachment. It did not feed well and I ended up with left over seed. I spun the left over seed onto part of the field, and it came up thick on that side and thin on the other...

I think the key is packing down the seed bed.

I have tried that as well putting it in with the oats. Tends to jam in the seed cups. Anyone here use a grass drill at all.
