SAV or not to SAV

Help Support CattleToday:

So what's everyone's thoughts on SAV bloodline is anyone on here going to use him this year?

SAV bulls look excellent, but in general, the calves they produce may disappoint. Resource looks amazing - calves have been slightly disappointing. On the other hand, Rainfall calves have been excellent.

I read through almost an entire thread on SAV America and I don't have any real opinion on the bull, except at $80.00 a straw that will limit his availability and I don't believe he will ever have the use or influence of Final Answer or In Focus, which both bulls had incredible commercial use. Out here in the far west we don't see much SAV influence. The largest herd here in Washington did use Pioneer pretty extensively and some Final Answer, but that was several generations ago. It seems as though in every sale out here, Cowboy Up is the hottest of the bulls. And I can see why, his progeny stand out, he stamps his sons, his genes are dominant, haven't seen any daughters as of yet. As a seed stock provider why would you use SAV influenced cattle or why wouldn't you?

In Oregon here. Not much SAV use but we did buy a long yearling bred to Brilliance who had a dynamite heifer calf for us in January. We were considering breeding her to Raindance for next year but ended up using what I already had in the tank (Barstow Bankroll). We got 3 pretty good calves out of Bankroll this spring so why not go for it with my last straw? Also got my hands on 1 straw of Sensation. I will hoard it and use it sometime. Mind you we do not breed many Angus at our place.

We have used SAV for a number of years. We visited SAV toured the operation, we started at 8:00 a.m. toured pastures until 4:30 looked at hundreds of cows with calves on the side. I never saw a bad udder or a bad foot. The cows were all deep with beautiful udders and great feet.....pretty impressive. Prior to that visit we had used Resource and Pioneer. Since the visit we have used quite a few other SAV bulls. We have several SAV sired calves in an upcoming sale. https://youtu.be/xgvb61vBzn4 lot 25A a Renown, https://youtu.be/RPtWMu8XYFI lot 26A a SAV Pioneer https://youtu.be/lfv-m4yMa3E lot 37 a Charlo the Charlo females are excellent! https://youtu.be/ClwH6qmkpio Lot 38 a SAV Reign https://youtu.be/6X5fhoEz2Bs Lot 40 a Resource lot 41 q Resource out of our SAV Abigale donor https://youtu.be/GvEN98OAufI lot 42 a little different twist this one is out of Buford Pathfinder a Resource son https://youtu.be/_F3XgduTJ3I lot 61 the cow goes back to SAV Final Answer the calf is a Rainfall this is a first calf heifer https://youtu.be/ijipcvSD7HU lot 63A is another Renown https://youtu.be/Ys6RdDvfrQM then lot 64A is a Resource grandson https://youtu.be/I_LTIMKj4yU needless to say I am a fan of SAV Genetics.

Well I may be an oddity, as I've still been using SAV Brilliance.
Calves come here with a "look at me" look to them, even from so so cows.
If I fault them, it's that the disposition of the mother is not improved. Not that they are bad, but usually about the same temperament as the cow.
