Anyone ever had this? I got more turnips than I can give away and I came across a recipe for this dish. It takes about 4-6 weeks to make it and I was wanting to try it if it was good. If so, I might as well make a lot of it. Just wondering.

Sauerruben - sauerkraut made with turnips instead of cabbage. Or maybe like turnip pickles? Interesting concept.

4 - 6 weeks? Does that include the time for making mash, fermenting, and distallation? :lol2:

Yep, so its gotta be good right?!!?

Here's the recipe I found.

5 lbs white turnip roots, peeled and shredded
3 tbsp salt

Mix turnips and salt and pack into a non metal container and tamp down
Cover and weight down as you would for sauerkraut
Ferment at room temperature for 4-6 weeks
Makes 1 - 2 quarts and can be canned like sauerkraut

Sounds easy enough I just can't imagine what it will taste like.

I don't know, "pickling it" doesn't do anything for okra. :(

Her sweetnesty and I are going to give it a go today. I'll let you know how it turns out.

If it's like at my house, you'll do what your told......
Doing what you are told isn't so bad, getting it done the way it is expected to be done might be the hard part.

We just put 10 lbs of sauuerruben in the crock to begin its fermentation process. In 4-6 weeks I'll let you know if it was worth the trouble. Of couse if I quit posting after this time you will know I did something terribly terribly wrong.

Bite your tongue, man! Pickeld okra is good. I'm not even supposed to eat it anymore and it's good. I still sneak a couple at Christmas and chew them about 100 times so none of the little seeds get hung up in my holey digestive tract.
