Dollar General and Family Dollar beat him at his own game.

Say what??? I don't see Family Dollar Store or Dollar General as being in the same competition. Sam's Club is more about groceries what few times I have been inside. This is a major economic event IMO.

Have you ever been in a FD or DG? You can get fat as a pig from all the groceries there. Around here just about every little small town has one and when you go by, the parking lot is full. IMO Walmart/Sams club stores have went too big in a lot of places and the small town stores are coming back. Big shopping malls are about like ghost towns except for the walkers and about two weeks before Christmas traffic.

Agree. My point is in the grocery department that are not comparable to General Dollar or Family Dollar. Our General Dollar is good for bread, milk, etc but they have no meat, eggs, etc.

Are your Dollar stores as filthy and unorganized as the ones in Warsaw?

Yes they are. The clerks look like they just fell out of bed. Sorry, I am sure there are some that don't fit that stereotype. My apologies if anyone here works for them.

i took off yesterday and noticed they are building a dollar general in the middle of nowhere on a highway. I wouldn't think that'd be a good spot but who knows. .it'll be packed.

in KY those stores are always busy as thats the only spot most people can go within a 30 min. drive.

You are correct. If I need something common, it is 3 miles to Dollar General. Otherwise, it is 18 miles to Maysville.

I believe I read somewhere that internet shopping outlets such as Amazon are really hurting Sam's and Wal-Mart. Ever increasing number of web shoppers. Becomes expensive maintaining an actual storefront vs. just a warehouse. Looks like Amazon is doing Sam's the same way Sam did all those mom and pop places across the nation. Classic example of how if you do not have your finger on the pulse of the consumer in today's climate, you can go from the top of the pile to fading into irrelevance rather quickly...it is proposed that the vast majority of us will order virtually everything via the web over the next decade, including our groceries. One of the reasons a career in logistics is considered highly promising. I mean groceries delivered to your door, not like Kroger does now where you can send them your list, then go pick up your grocery order already bagged and waiting.

Down here it seems like there is a Dollar General just about everywehre there is a highway intersection and a Family Dollar across the street. But they draw from a lot of countryside that doesn't have any kind of store for miles and miles so I guess they sell enough to keep the doors open.

Walmart closing Sams that are not performing to expectations is the same as we do with the cow herd. We cull the non-performers.

I always like Sam's Club, and I'm not too fond of Costco. Costco just doesn't seem to have much to offer in the way of food I like. When we moved out here the local Sam's Club shut down. We had just renewed our membership before we moved b/c we knew about the one out here. When I called to get a refund they stated they didn't want to do that b/c there was another location we could go to. That location was 4 hours away. I tried to explain that, and it took a good 10+ minutes to get it through their head that I was not driving 4 hours one way to go to their store. I did get my money back, but I also understood why they might have been closing some stores.

I see they have built quite a few like that in a lot of places around here, and like you say they seem to have a lot of traffic in and out in a days time. Pass by one outside of Sharpsburg, and once in a while off the AA outside of Tollesboro, there is always several vehicles at both of them. We now have 3 Dollar Generals in Winchester, one is within 4 miles. We also have a Family Dollar and a Dollar Tree in town too.

I did not think the Dollar Generals and stuff are cheaper... just more convenient. A lot of people do not do a large shopping trip once a week or what ever. They buy smaller amounts multiple times a week.

It has been rumored that the business like Dollar General have put the pedal to the floor on expansion in hopes of Amazon buying them out.
