Market a little better this week. 600# steers brought 107.00, heifers brought 94.50. Things are looking up, or so it seems right now. We'll see.

The sales barns always do good right after a long holiday. I sold a trailer load that I should have culled last year. The prices were up a good bit but a friend flooded our sales barn.

The guy bought all that ran thought our local barn on December 23 and sold half them January 3. He fed them cheap hay and says he made $22 a head after fuel and hay on the third. He is going to sell the rest on the 13th and he thinks he thinks he will make 15 to 20 on them to. He had most of them in groups of 10 witch is the max group size for our barn.

I hope so I have most of last year's calf crop in a pasture consuming hay like there was no tomorrow.
I was waiting on the report from Crockett to decide if I am going to remove some of the leaches next week.

I did two things wrong in the last month.

Number one I went ahead and sold hay everyone was asking to buy. I won't have much margin come spring.

Number two I didn't buy a lot of cows while they were cheap!

That's the reason mine are still in the pasture I wasn't selling cheap cows, with a two year hay supply or what started as a two year hay supply, I decided I wasn't getting robbed after last years input cost. After I get a pencil on these calfs I might wished I had given them away. So far all its costing is hay but that could be very costly if we have a bad hay year. O well not the first time I have rolled the dice and came up with craps.

If you don't mind my asking, which barn would that be?
It was Hollins. I hit the road after my cows were sold. I didn't pull up the final sales reports so I don't know how far he is pushing his numbers.

The group of cows that I sold ran with the wrong bull. They were nice looking cows but they were not something I could ship under my contracts. I kept some of them for freezer beef.

We're going to ship the rest of the late summer calves next week.. I'm not very optimistic, as none of the backgrounding guys around here have many oats this year. We'll see! Like Caustic, I'll be glad to get rid of the hungry devils! More for their mothers!

I took 7 in this afternoon. Look to me like they are going to be on the light side. Nice little rain we had gave 3 more a pass as their mommas are still in good shape. It also gave the cow list a reprieve for now.

I called the guy a little while ago and asked him how he penciled out his numbers and I see where he messed up his numbers. I think he did make money but I don't know if it was worth his time.

According to an email market report I get weekly. A lot of feeder lots went to the sidelines during the summer's grain price crisis and/or during the fall credit crisis. They now are running at 72% capacity across the industry. As they empty out their pens it is time to either buy back in or get out of the biz, and I certainly wouldn't want to try to sell an empty feedlot in this real estate market. That and all the cows that went to slaughter last year due to high kill cow prices and high costs should translate into stronger prices throughout 2009.
