Round Bale Feeders

Help Support CattleToday:

Looks good, I should have said earlier if I was to build another one I would probably have the Vee a little more than the 90 degrees to let the bale sit a bit deeper in it but still works well at 90 degrees.

do these style feeders really save you that much hay?

Seems like a lot of it would get knocked down and stepped on or laid on.

There can't be any more waste with those elevated feeders than there is with one of the regular round cage feeders.
I know a lot of the waste on my conventional round bale feeders comes from the bale sitting on the ground and the hay inside the feeder just soaks up water, most notably the bottom part of the bale. They'll eat some of the waste, finally... after most of the bale is gone and they shove the thing off to one side, but only because it's winter and there's nothing else for them TO eat.
For every 4x5 round bale I feed, there may be the equivalent of 2-3 sq bales left over for me to rake up and compost at the end of winter.
