I had my first one done yesterday. And I have to say I'm plesantly surprised this morning that there's no pain. Instead of doing it himself, my dentist sent me to a specialist. Is that the norm these days? Prices at the specialist ran from $1200 down to $800, depending on the tooth's location and condition. Mine was a bit over $1,000 and now I've still got to go back to my dentist and get the crown (another $800). When my sister had one done several years ago, her dentist did it all for a lot less than $1800!

I think Dentists can charge what they want. We have Delta Dental and they contract with the Dentist for costs. No matter what the insurance pays the dentist finds some little thing to add on which the contract with the ins. co. does not cover.
Tom.

Last one I got was about $900....everythign including the crown. Wanted a gold one with a small diamond in it and already had the little diamond but he recommended the regular stuff.

We haven't had dental insurance in a long time. I guess we could get some, but most years we don't spend a lot; just cleanings and exams. I was just surprised that my regular dentist didn't do the root canal along with the crown. Now I've got to be numbed again. I hate that part. :(

:lol2: Yeah, I wanted the gold crown myself. Hygenist said I was the wrong color for gold. So, I went along with the hygenist's recommendation.

My last one was 1800 but I had not been on the dental plan long enough for it to get covered. Otherwise it would have paid 50%. There aren't too many general dentists around here who still do them, especially smaller teeth with one root. I have had four starting when I was about fifteen and the last one was three years ago.

You should not have to be numbed for the crown to be put on. You no longer have nerves in that tooth. They can drill and everything and you shouldn't feel it. That tooth is like a stump.

The tooth may be like a stump but the gums are definately not. I did one last year without a shot and it was not fun.

Let them give you the shot.

I would have traded places with you yesterday Frankie. I had a colonscopy. The procedure wasnt bad at all because I was asleep. It was the prep that was bad which included eating hardly anything for a day and a half and then the dreaded clean out. lol

Same here. I wanted gold with lightning streaks. Dentist just kind of ignored the subject.

According to my dentist, it's either gold or silver. He says they've found that crowns made from precious metals last longer than any other. He uses the gold. He doesn't recommend getting one with a porcelain cover; says that's just another thing to go wrong in the mouth.

Yes, that's what they told me, too. They grind that tooth off below the gum and the gums still have feeling.

My Dad tells me that when he was in Dental school one of his classmates finished his entire "inlay" requirement on one guys front teeth. He inlaid a naked lady in gold on both of the fellas front teeth. I guess he was a pretty big hit in North Omaha after that. and the classmate had em lined up around the corner for inlays.

Theres a dentsist here that advertises "grills " on the radio . Towards the end of his add he mentions that he will not pull out healthy teath to replace with gold ones. Why would anyone want to have a good tooth pulled out?

Results were good Thanks. I was worried because my dad had colon cancer really bad at age 60 when they found it. Im 52 and The doctor told me he would see me in 5 years after the test. I breathed a huge sigh of relief.

My dentist does the root canals himself and also has the machine to make the crowns right in the office. Everything is done in one appointment. It was several years back but if I remember right the whole kit and kaboodle cost $1200 and the insurance picked up about half.
