I just found out there's a rogue heifer back on a lease place I've been letting stockpile since late August. She has damaged barb wire fence and eaten my paid for grass off and on for 6 months. Owner won't do anything to contain her on his place.

At this point, I want to load her and sell to cover fence/corral repairs. I tried to load her in September but she is CRAZY.

What tranquilizer gun is good for 75 +/- yards? Or is there such a thing? She is high headed as I've ever seen and won't let ya get close.

Hiring someone to rope her... I just dont know if that'd be worth the money's.

The only other option is dispatch her in the field. Slaughterhouse is 750 feet away. Only issue there is she MIGHT weigh 750 pounds.

What would you do? Anyone is this area wanna help? 😆

At 750 lbs she'd bring $1500 at a sale, if she is a beef type heifer. If she were local to me, we'd charge $250 to catch her, so I would guess others there local would be about the same. But, if she is just 750 feet from a processor, I would just shoot her and drag her, use a front end loader, a roll-back if you know someone that has one, and carry her over there.

My Dad had a heifer one time that you couldn't get closer than 75 yards from. I got as close as I could with my deer rifle and put one between her running lights. I was careful not to get her spooked before she was shot. Sure didn't make for prime beef but was better than wild game (elk).

Here a couple well mounted guys would rope her and drag her into a trailer but you are a long ways from here. The other option used here is to get one like that in with a bunch of cows. Again guys horse back get the entire herd into a corral that is tall enough and stout enough that she has no escape.

"Owner won't do anything to contain her on his place." Had a guy here that loaded and sold the problems like this in the owner's name. They charged him for rustling. Might be a good SSS situation or not know how the beef got in your freezer!

in theory... it does to me too. I just dont know if there is such a gun that's effected at 50 to 100 yards. I am doubting there is based on what I've read on the ol interweb.
How big an area are we talking about? Is it clear of trees, buildings etc? I have tranqed them from horse back before, if you couldn't get close enough on foot or in a vehicle.

Edited to add: Does she have one place in your fence she goes in and out of, or does she just go over or through at the closest point to where she is at the time?

Around here you call the sheriffs dept. They have a wild cow catcher come and get it. Then the owner has so many day to pick her up and pay all the expenses or she goes to the auction. When I had one on my place it was going to take a while for them to get to me so I finally got her caught and hauled it their cattle yard. They sold it a couple weeks later and paid my expenses plus a few dollars a day for feed.

If he sold them in the owner's name, how could they charge him for rustling? He did all the work and certainly didn't benefit.

People are funny about others marketing things that don't legally belong to them.
Well, there's that. Point taken. We've had a few similar situations around here and the owner is usually just pleased to get the check and get rid of the problem - especially because he wouldn't do anything about it.

Calculate the damage she has done, fence repair, lost feed, stress etc. Hand him a bill for $200 over what you calculate her value to be, then give him the option of paying the damage or giving you a bill of sale for the heifer. With a bill of sale you can legally dispose of her however you want.

Take a gun with you next time just in case. Sounds like she is aggressive and you may need to protect yourself while checking your place.
I bought one like that at an auction once. Seemed a little jumpy in the ring but not a man killer. My normal routine was to corral new arrivals until they calmed down and I'm glad I kept her contained. I had an open trailer at the time and I strapped a cattle panel on top so she wouldn't get out. She tried, and tried hard to get to me, but the cattle panel held. I took her right to the processor and donated her as hamburger.
