Congratulations.

I retired from federal service in 2010. Now I work twice as hard but one half the stress level.

Retirement in some ways is a disappointment. If you are not a well disciplined person, one can fall into an inefficient lifestyle. A regular job is not a bad life and retirement is not a perfect life. I sometimes discipline myself. If you don't live on someone else's expectations, then you may decay into not meeting your own expectations.

I cannot image how bad retirement would be for me if I did not have my farm and cattle. My personality requires me to be engaged or else I fall into bad life habits out of sheer boredom.

I hope that helps. Good luck to you. Since you already have cattle you are far ahead of where I started.

This is my retirement gift to you: a poem by the noted poet Mary Oliver. I have stirred myself to action (or mindful inaction) more than once, by reading to myself the last lines:

The Summer Day

Who made the world?
Who made the swan, and the black bear?
Who made the grasshopper?
This grasshopper, I mean-
the one who has flung herself out of the grass,
the one who is eating sugar out of my hand,
who is moving her jaws back and forth instead of up and down-

Being retired over ten years the biggest mistake I have seen is many try to do all the bucket list in the first couple years.

Being retired over ten years the biggest mistake I have seen is many try to do all the bucket list in the first couple years.

I've known several tho, that scheduled those things just a few years too late...I knew a guy that the only thing left on his bucket list was skydiving, but he keeled over dead in backyard one day. His wife had his ashes dumped from a helicopter form 5000' up over Lake Tawokani. I don't think that really counts.....
