Retaining Heifers in a Hot Market

I talked with a guy a few weeks ago about AIing a group of heifers. You drop them off for two weeks and he syncs them up then AIs them to his bulls. Cost was $150 a head which I didn't think was bad, he says avg conception rate is 60%.

From my experience I'd pass at that price and conception rate. At that price I'd also want a breeding guarantee.

Do the synchronizing yourself and work with the person that sells semen to do the AI at a scheduled time.

Doing this I've never had such a low conception rate.

It would be really nice to have the time to do everything myself.....unfortunately there only so much time in a day.

I don't know how many animals you are working with or what kind of corral you have, but the time to insert the hormone appliances in twenty heifers was easily done in an hour with a good working facility. And the AI tech inseminated them in about the same amount of time with plenty of time to shoot the bull (figuratively and literally).

I've been involved with the process in the past. After many many years I've learned that things rarely go as planned for me. I'm sure hauling the cattle would take longer than the AI part itself but at least I can be flexible on that and it would get done. There may be cheaper options too, I only talked with one man.

No sir, your temperatures get to be unfit for man or beast. I can always put more clothes on, or work harder. There is a limit to how many clothes I can take off or how still I can be. I definitely would not live better in those conditions. You guys that suffer through that are far tougher than I.
I agree... Not much can warm you up like breaking water when you're all bunded up. I do not like the heat.
