Keep 40 to 70% every year. Breed for 30 to 42 days and let the heifers sort themselves. Visual doesn't always give you the best females.

I've kept anywhere from 10 to 30% from first cycle calvers and kept with the bull for 42-60 days but I'm gonna try your method this year then feed out the open ones for freezer beef. I decided this when you shared this in the past so thanks for sharing.
