We bought a young red Angus bull this spring and now have a friend that want's to rent him. Never leased/rented our bulls before. He has earned his keep already and will be used for clean-up if necessary. Don't know what to charge or what conditions to put on the treaty...any advise. Not even sure that I want him dating outside the family...

We recently rented one of our Brahman sires to a research body about 200 ks away. We were paid $50 a week for him,we had to have him vet checked, insured, vibrio innoculated, all of which they paid for,as well as transport.
If I was you I'd stipulate a time span, our boy was away for 7 weeks. I wouldn't have worried only he was only going to be in a paddock doing nothing so a few dollars was OK.

I think George is right. Is the little amount of money you will be making worth taking the risk.? The reward would have to be much bigger for me to take that risk.

I do not know you or your neighour. But, cows suffer from STD's. Is his herd clean? Can he prove it?

There is also the problem of broken penis - who pays?

There are too many things that need to be covered. Tell your neighbour sorry - is not going to happen.

Keep a closed herd and you will be very happy - never know what will happen otherwise.

I have borrowed/rented and rented out always knew something about the cows and generally the bull.Never had any problems.
first rented one in 94 paid $200. rented one last year and paid $250. All of these agreements were between friends and neighbors, so I'm glad we've had good luck so far...........
If it weren't for these trades/deals small producers 5-20 A/U would find it hard to get ahead. Once you reach 20 animals it's time to think about your own bull maybe
I guess it would be how you feel about you friends management

Off the subject a little.. I think it's interesting that there are objections to renting a bull out because of what he may "bring back to the herd" but buying cows from a sale barn isn't a worry?

Buying cows from a salebarn a person can isolate them for a couple of weeks to see if there are any problems. The generic problems will show up later of course but they only affect their offspring. A rented bull is not normally kelp in isolation for a couple of weeks. Their offspring effects a larger percentage of the herd. JMO

I be agreein with Bama here. If I be buyin anythin at the salebarn, it be havin a lonely life for maybe more than a month if needs be for me ta be sure my girls are safe. Some folks rent bulls without any troubles come upon em. It just be a big risk that ya need ta take full measure of, surely.
