Does anyone know if a heifer or bull can be registered into the AJCA if the dam's information is missing? Apparently, the previous owner of our cow passed away and his wife knows that the sire was registered and only the dam's name. She believes that the dam (Honey) was not registered but could have been. She tossed all his papers on his herd.

I understand that the (Honey) dam's lineage is registered, if that matters at all.

Also, what is the difference between registration and pedigree? I thought that was one in the same, as in, without pedigree an animal could not be registered. This is so confusing for a newbie. LOL

Any help navigating this would be greatly appreciated.

I can only tell you that any upgrading was only allowed on females. Not even sure if they allow upgrades in females anymore.. but I do think they can be recorded. Males are not allowed to be registered if they aren't from registered animals, by a previously registered breeder.
Just say that your cow was registered with the club, and you bought her with a breeders certificate of who the service sire was, then the calf would be eligible for registration upon it's birth.
Is there any chanced she has a tattoo in her ears? It is required in both ears by the owner of record when she was born. If she was never registered, and the owner is deceased and there are no records available, then I am afraid you are probably out of luck.

I doubt that you have any recourse to get her registered with the AJCA...

Pedigrees are simply the papers that show the recorded ancestry that an owner has on any/all animals that they own. I have "pedigrees" on many of our commercial angus crossed cattle... going back as much as 5 generations... It is simple a record of all the animals in the "family tree"... I can show several generations of animals' backgrounds in the "pedigrees", I have on my animals... I keep these records for reasons of knowing what families produce the better calves and keeper replacement heifers etc... but few of them have registered animals in their backgrounds except for the bulls we use... both AI and live cover.
However, you need to have pedigrees that have all the info including the registration numbers etc; in order to register an animal if it is not on record already with the AJCA. It would be in your best interest to contact them directly, but I do not see any path you can take if the owners widow has discarded all records.

I meant to say "Welcome to the CT forum" also.

The title of your first post was "Registering Jersey Bull" , so I have to ask if you were asking about that because the cow you acquired had a bull calf? And you are thinking about maybe wanting to register it? You also said you are a newbie... new to cattle in general, or new to registered animals, or new to jersey's?
