R-CALF: Nebraska Membership Chair Speaks to College Students

Curtis, Neb. – R-CALF USA Nebraska Membership Chair Chris Abbott recently spoke to more than 40 students at the Nebraska College of Technical Agriculture (NCTA) in Curtis about the national organization's positions on Mandatory Country-of-Origin Labeling (COOL), animal identification, and why the U.S. should strive to maintain the highest health and safety standards in the world for cattle and beef products. Abbott also is the president of the Independent Cattlemen of Nebraska (ICON), an affiliate organization of R-CALF USA.

"R-CALF is working to maintain the health of your industry so that it will be profitable for you, the younger generation, to enter," Abbott told the audience. "We are working to implement Mandatory COOL in order to distinguish our product from imported beef, and to increase the marketability of our product.

"We need to be able to identify imported beef before we require Animal ID on every head of cattle," continued Abbott. "Consumers want to know what country their meat is coming from.

"Future producers and consumers, such as those at NCTA, will be the backbone that drives the cattle industry in coming years," said Abbott. "They need to be informed and involved."

Pat Morgan, president of the Nebraska Junior Hereford Association, said future cattle producers need an organization willing to speak up and be noticed so there will be a good and productive industry for generations to come.

NCTA Student Senate President Jenna Henrichs said Abbott really seemed to spark the students' interest by making them aware of the many issues that will affect their own futures in the U.S. cattle industry.

"He opened their eyes to what R-CALF is, and how it is working to help ensure the future of our industry," said Henrichs.
