Hmmm... Well, thank you very much, andybob, but I prefer the looks of the murray grey. My cattle are going to be edible decorations...hehe.

I'm going to a few places to look at some cattle for sale tomarrow.
 
I believe someone had a better idea though instead of raising the cattle go to the sale barn and just buy the kill cows at 35 cents a pound. Probably a lot cheaper and more efficient for you.

I would go out and get some commericial herefords. They would give you a good carcass, and they are (in general) one of the more docile cattle breeds. Another good point - herefords, at least in this area, are not in as high of demand; you could get started cheaper.

You could always go the longhorn route, and cross them with a beefier bull to give you nice calves to butcher.
