we had a late calf on july 23rd and it seems like he isnt getting very much milk. he goes from teat to teat bucking the bag. her bag is pretty small too. and he doesnt have very much foam around his mouth. first question: are those adequate ways to tell if hes getting milk? and two: if hes not getting enough milk what should we give him?

oh and one more question. his momma prolapsed and the vet said she doesnt have any greater of chance of prolapsing than any other cow so no need to sell her. everybody else we've talked to has said different. whats ya'lls opinions on that?

heres a pic of him. he weighs close to 100 pounds. how does he look?

Looks very good for a two day old calf. Can you put the cow in a chute or something and check her teats and see if she has milk? Watch the calf nurse. If his tail is switching he's getting something but it would be nice to see foam. If he's sucking often you may never see it tho. Might be good to go ahead and supplement the cowwith a good 16% dairy pellet to try and increase milk production.

We had a cow prolapse before she had the calf and the vet told us we should seriously think about sending her to the auction(after she has the calf) because she is very likely to prolapse again.......she did, only 2 months after the calf was born.....so we stiched her up and sent her on her way.....

Give the calf a bottle until you can tell that the cow has adequate milk.
Conventional wisdom is that if they prolapse before they calve the will again, if the prolapse after the won;t. I've found the first part to be 100% accuarte and the second half to be 10% accuarte.
