Question for the Longhorn folks

Help Support CattleToday:

it means not only will they eat grass.but other woody plants an leaves.but i would not expect a longhorn to live on those things alone without feed or hay.

True...they have a varied "pallet" of vegetation. I've seen ours pass up fresh grass in favor of weeds. They also are excellent "tree trimmers" that like a variety of leaves. When we first got our place, it was probably 50% covered in weeds (due to neglect of previous owner). Now, we see very few weeds in pastures & alleyways...they seem to keep them eaten down while they are young and fresh. Of course, we have also tried to keep other weeds mowed before they turn to seed.

Guess the Longhorn just likes a lot of different things in their "salad" and not just "lettuce"...lol.

It means that Longhorns will clean up a place, they will eat alot of things other cattle won't even look at. Their ability to forage and eat whatever they had in front of them kept them alive for the 500 or so years that they roamed free here in the United States before the other breeds of cattle were imported. It doesn't mean that you don't need to feed them but they will browse and eat alot of weeds, vines and junk that other cattle won't.
