His brother had no arms. One day Quasimodo asked his brother to ring the bell for him, as he would be out of town.
His brother struggled to figure a way to ring the bell with no arms until he figured out he could run at the bell and hit it with his grotesque face. On the third ring, he missed the bell, fell out of the tower, and landed 100 feet below on the ground.
Passersby knew Quasimodo but didn't recognize who this was, dead on the ground.
Finally, someone says " I don't know his name, but his face rings a bell".
(I know... I'm sorry.)
