Putting down one of my babies tomorrow:(

We had one of our mares foal at the end of June this year. Beautiful foal with great personality. We brought him in from the winter pasture to wean from his mother yesterday. We put him in one of our corrals with our bull calves (he has been around cattle since the day he was born). Sometime during the night he got out of the corral, and now this is beyond us how he got out! Its a 5 foot fence! Anyways he got out and we found him this morning across the road by the neighbors pasture tangled up in barbed wire. His leg was ripped right open to the bone. Tendons and muscle were just hanging from him. Poor little fella. We put a makeshift cast on him for right now and tomorrow we are taking him to the vet college to see if they can do anything for him. But we have faced the facts that he will be most likely put down. I feel so horrible! He is in the barn with his mother right now, he seems so happy right now, he's eating great, walking around. I just feel so bad, he was a horse that had such great potential! I think this is one of the hardest things to deal with in life!

Jo, I'm so sorry to hear about your foal's injury. That must have been a heartbreaking discovery. I hope the folks at the vet college were able to help.

Well we took Montana to the vet college. They said it looked really hopeful for him. The vet told us the tendons he tore would heal (they were on the front part of his leg, not the back which right away would have ment putting him down). The vet told us he would be fine in 2 weeks, he would just need a bit of surgery and be as good as new. But today the vet called (Montana has been staying at the vet college so they can keep an eye on him 24hrs a day). He didn't give us any good news. He told us the reason why Montana walked pretty good on his bad leg was because he has no feeling in it at all. The tissue was beginning to die, even the tissue at the back of the leg which ment real trouble. They did an ultrasound on him to make sure. They said that the bone was also dead in the leg, all the tissue and nerves were dead. We made the decision this afternoon right after talking to the vet. Little Montana was put to sleep.

Thank you for the followup. I'm really sorry about Montana. It's so hard to go through something like that, but you went beyond what some folks would. You did everything you could for him. No one could ask for more.
