I am new to the boards and I have been lurking around for about a month now. I live in central oklahoma and have about a 100 head of cross bred cows. I have a black angus bull that has one eye that is very watery and he keeps it closed most of the time. I noticed that the eye has a purple spot. My dad said that it is purple eye. I was wondering if anyone knew anything about purple eye??

Thanks

This sounds to me like pink eye. I would isilate him to keep it from spredding. Contact your vet to get the proper antibiotic. Mine like to use Exenel sub Q, exenel 1 cc with 1 cc of Dexemethesone shot in the third eyelid. Also he spray a topical on the eye itself. What ever you deside to do , do it now.

If you see a crater develop in the center of the eye, you definately have pink eye. Get the vet right away if you see this. Things will go down hill really fast if you don't

Pinkeye is not the end of the world. If you treat it, it'll go away in about 30 days. If you leave it, it'll go away in about a month.

They could go blind in that time also and it would be the end of the animals world for me. Just my thought.

Upon further thought. It seems funny coming from a Hereford breeder that you would say that. The economic impact for one that does not run a large herd could be drastic. Same for one that does have a large herd. Not to pick a fight but that comment makes you sound silly. We know your not so what gives.

The same thought crossed my mind. If a cow is blind in one eye, they usually can adjust but if your bull is blind in one eye, that affects his depth perception and could lead to problems breeding. I would have treated it as soon as I saw it.

Reguardless if it truely is pinkeye or not, get your bull out of the sun to let the eye heal after treating it.

If it really is pinkeye, it will not just go away. Lots of things irritate eyes and cause weepy, runny, swollen eyes, most of which are not truely pinkeye. Pinkeye will cause permanent damage if it is not treated quickly and properly.

Nonsense about it just going away.

He's right.. it won't just "go away". You need to bring the bull in and treat him if it's pinkeye. LA200 is pretty much the drug of choice. If you're getting a lot of sunlight and there isn't any place he can get out of the direct light, consider getting the glue on eye patches also.

Not to rock the boat here guys, but I've had cases of IBR that look like that as well. The eye will start running out of the corner first and they will try and keep it closed most of the time. Eventually they will cloud over white, and you should be able to notice a runny nose as well. IBR or pink eye, well either way, I would treat rather than the alternative.
