Prototheca Mastitis

Help Support CattleToday:

Never had it diagnosed but probably had it at sometime or another. Appears to be more prevalent in wetter areas along with "filth".

The reason I ask, is this winter, two cows in the herd at my place of employment got it. It is incurable and comes from an algae. The only treatment is culling but since it is a university research farm and they are low on cows right now and a bunch are late lactation, they won't do it (one of the cows is the highest producer at 104 lbs/day). I'd never heard of it before now and have no idea how they could get it, the place is kept pretty clean and no wet areas where an algae could grow...its very interesting, bad, and confusing all at once.
