How do you know which one to use. 16% or 24% protein. Do you use these year around?

The feed salesman will tell you to use the one that makes him the most money.

What do you want from the tub? Cows will either overfed on them or underfeed. Even if they ate the exact amount, what is the cost per pound of protien? Calculate the % protien times the weight and divide the cost by that answer. Then find the cost of soymeal pellets and multiply 45% by whatever weight you priced then divide the price by your answer to get cost per pound of protien.

Post some local prices and I'll calculate it for you.

200# $64 24% protien - 250# $82 22% protein

My feed supplier tells me that the protein percentage is available at any percent you desire. If you have good grass you may very well not need a tube, but in harsh times you might. Keep in mind the higher the protein % the more forage they'll need on their gut.

The 200# tub is $1.33 per pound of protien

The 250# tub is $1.49 per pound of protien.

If soymeal is $200 a ton ( I have no idea the current price) it is $0.22 a pound of protien.

UM jason what am I doing wrong,24%protien times 200 lbs. 4800- divided by $64 is 75 cents?

200 times 24% is 48 pounds. (200x24/100).

$64/48=$1.33

Remember to divide by 100 to get a % if you don't use the % key. When dividing to get a cost always use the dollar figure first. Otherwise you are figuring pounds per dollar.

The advantage of protien tubs is not having to hand feed every day or every other day. What is convenience worth?

Convienience is only worth something if you can make more doing something else. For those with jobs that have cows on the side, the tubs might make sence, but if you have to have a job to afford the tubs?

Cows get checked better if you feed them each day. You can adjust their rations as the weather changes. You might save an animal by seeing a problem before it happens.

On 50 cows, supplimenting 1/2 a pound of protien a day, the extra cost is $27.75. If you only make $8/hr at your job, 3&1/2 hours are spent just buying the time to go to work.

Just another perspective for others to consider.

I was looking at it from the angle of the folks that can't get to their cattle daily. It's to dark, 30 mile drive one way etc. I happen do agree with you, but we don't supplement our cows anyway. That 1/4 lb a day they get to get them up to the feed bunk to check them out doesn't to me seem hardly worth their effort. But they always come runnin for that taste.
