Can anyone help with information regarding prognosis for an otherwise hail and hardy 4 mo old bull calf that showed up today with about 6 inches of rectum protruding. There is some fresh blood apparent but not bleeding excessively. The calf is holding his tail up and straining as if to have a bowel movement. Calf does not show other signs of illness at this point. Thanks for any insights.

also put him in a pen alone if he is bulling on other calves which could be causing himself excessive straining.

I don't know that much about it, but maybe a kidney stone?? Some goats get them.

if you're comfortable enough to try it, you can push back in and see if it stays, but personally I would call the vet and have him (her) see what can be done, maybe a few stitches if possible to help keep it in.

Had one like this many years back that got the runs on fresh rye grass pasture, got him on a high fiber diet and the prolapsed rectum returned to normal,
Can also have the vet tie in a sphinkter and tie off the protruding tissue and it should be fine after that but not too many vets know how or have done that procedure

Ok, I don't know what kind of vets you have, but replacing and treating a rectal prolapse isn't rocket science! It is well documented, and can be found in ANY bovine surgery text. The only problems occur if there is perforation/devitalization of the rectum (thus necessitates amputation or resection of the prolapse) or if the sphincter is too tight. There is more than 1 technique, and all are quite easy and effective.

Yes the procedure is very simple and well documented, but how many local, predominantly small practices with some large exposure get to do that particular procedure, not many, we have over 200 vet practices in our two little towns here and probably a handful have the experience to do that procedure or would be willing to attempt it, yes it is not rocket science.

You have over 200 vet practices in your two little towns? Wow! We only have two in our county! One is a dog and cat vet and the other is a real vet that handles all animals.
