Probably had to be there and see it in person to really get the gist of it but here it goes anyway. The other night I was glancing at the TV and there was a program on that was soliciting donations for their cause. As the head spokesman put it, they were really needing donations and was running a SPECIAL that night. For that night only they were going to give you a $25 discount if you were an elderly person or had served in the armed services. Think about it. A $25 discount. Not a bad deal - especially if you qualify and pledge $25.

Giving yourself the discount?

I thought it was quite a sales pitch. Kinda like the IRS "giving you a refund".

Do you never get Tax rebates (refunds) as we do sometimes here, my Son has just had a nice hefty one.

We get them too. Been meaning to ask you what are the taxes in England like? Do you have income tax, sales tax, property tax and all the stuff we do? And I was wandering what the percentages are. And do you have a death tax. I'm currious cause I have a suspicion that we copy a lot of your governements policies.

I thought we followed your Government. not sure if you will be able to open this site up, as it tells you what the taxes are that we have to pay, and the ones we receive ie Tax Credits/Child benefit. this doesn't matter how much you earn everyone with Children under the age of 18 and in full time education gets these.

one that is not on there is VAT Value Added Tax on the cost of goods it is at 15% in the £, but is said to go up again to 17.5% in the £ when the recession is over. then to 20% in the £ within a few months after.

They are starting to kick the VAT idea around over here - on top of the present income tax. Think you saw tea parties last time, just wait!!

Never got a tax rebate that wasn't the result of an overpayment of taxes. But some do get a rebate and pay nothing in.

Earned income credit, Vette. I used to get that when I was a single mother. I knew women who would blow that money on crap but I always used mine to put into savings, buy tires, pay off credit card debt or something like that. The only good part about being a single parent. I worked full time and owned a home but since I didn't make tons of money I always qualified for EIC.

That is what my Son got back the emergency Tax he paid, he was paying way over the odds for about a year, as he is self employed his accountant went through his records and found he hadn't claimed for his VAT back, or his expenses, he is learning.

Lammie..things here are stupid for one parent families, the more you earn the more you get, seems strange to me, when I was a bringing my Daughter up on my own I never qualified for anything and I was below the bread line, I worked but only part-time so did not work enough hours to qualify, It has always amazed me that the people who need the help most get the least, here.

 For your sake, I hope not.

Can't really figure out what all that means. Are you taxed on income plus a sales tax too? Where I live I have to pay a federal tax plus a state tax plus county taxes on property and when I die my children will have to pay around 50% of what I accumulated with after tax money to the feds and another 6% to the state. Of course they will give them 6 months to come up with the cash.

We pay income tax after the first £6,745. say I earn £315.00 a week I would pay £39.79 tax then £23.10 National insurance (this for the health service) and I would get £252.11 in my hand. That is on 40 hour per week. so that would be £16,380.00 a year so I would make out of that £13,109.80.
we make VAT payments on all goods except food and children's clothing.
we pay general rates on our houses depends on how much it is worth and what band you are in, our house is in the top of the bands, band G we will pay £2,210 a year this year, it will go up next year. the house is worth about just over a quarter of a million. Then when we die the children will have to pay Inheritance Tax. and a Stamp Duty(This is like your Fed Tax) not sure how that works, and if we have any money left over they will have to pay tax on that to, even though we already have. the only one laughing all the way to the bank is the Tax office in both Countries it would seem.

Things here are designed to encourage one parent families. The welfare check has replaced the father in so many households...

I know quite a few widows that will not re-marry again because they would loose the payments coming to them because of their former husbands pension or ssi. They still fall in love, they still move in together, but just won't marry. One of my best friends is like that now. She would love to marry her man, but financial sense just won't let her do it.

A living trust is a good way to protect your assets from taxation after death. I am not sure if it is legal in all states.
Tom.

European countries for the most part are far more left, or socialistic then the US [check it out]
We are wanting to catch up and will. So we [the US] does fashion it's tax and social policies after those of Europe. What and see. Soon to have communist medicine, government owned companies. And even more of a trend to equalize the $. We will have more and more non working being supported by fewer and fewer working. :help:

Then you really will be like us. Not Good.

In the Great state of Missouri if I go buy a new truck I pay state and county sales tax on the purchase amount then I pay personal propety taxes on it every yr that I own it aand when I sell it to Jo down the road he has to pay sales tax on the amount I sold it to him for and then he has to pay personal property taxes on it every yr that he owns it and it goes on and on no matter how many times it is sold

I might be dumb but isn't that double taxation?
