Just wandering what kind of live weight people have been charging for freezer beef on a live weight basis.
say 1100 steer?

Most folks sell by the hanging weight.
There can be alot of difference between a live steer's weight and when he's naked, depending on the animal.
If someone wants a live animal then they pay the going price, usually determined by the latest trends at the sale barn. Kind of hard to get folks to pay for beef when they don't have a clue as to how much per pound that it is costing them.
Keep your customers informed and happy...a couple of pi$$ed-off ones can cost you dearly. Dmc

We are getting $1,800 for a 1,250 steer. We do all the work and pay for all kill fees. Works around $4.00 a lb of edible meat. We also guarntee that will be the maximum amount that they pay. These are "Natural Grown" steers wth no implants or feed additives. We are in the Houston area and our target market are the health concise soccer mom with the disposable income for this type of beef. If your more in the country, it might get hard for this type of pricing, more along the line of commodity price.

Matt....do you have any trouble marketing a live steer, our customers are usually limited by freezer space so a split half is our best seller, although we do have a few with large families that buy a half at a time.

We match people up who want only a half a calf. If we have a calf ready and only have one half sold, we would take the other half from time to time. In our family we have three households that get meat so we always have a room for a calf. We also help supply Good Samaritan Lutheran Home in Cypress, TX. They are a home for mentally handicaped adults and other young people. We donate at least a calf a year and we pay the kill fee for people who donate animals from the Tomball FFA Project show. Most years a number of hogs, lambs, and a few steers get donated to Good Sam.

Thanks,

Matt
