Went to the local salebarn today. I think I should be raising goats. They were selling for $35-$38 cwt. 350 lb calves, reds, blacks or whites were $91-$96 cwt. Holsteins ran around 45-48 slaughter cows about the same as goats. Didn;t stick around for the heavier calves.

I don't know what the sale barn prices are but I do know that goats are getting to be big business around here. There is a huge population of Latinos around as compared to days past. A lot of the grocery stores are realizing this and stocking foods they want.
In many cities now the Latinos are the majority.

One price point that surprised me was a bunch of nice Holstein yearlings that were no saled at 250 bucks. Yet some Holstein bottle calf heifers sold for over 150. A darn nice guernsey cow with her first calf at side sold for 450 bucks. As usual at the salebarn I couldn;t figure out any real pattern except most everything except goats sold awfully cheap. 30-50 lb pics sold for about 35 cents a pound.
I've got the feed but not the room or I would have been really tempted to pick up some of those Holsteins and hauled them to the dairy sell next week.

I would have been very tempted at that price.

Paid $450 for my first Jersey as a 2 yo, no calf. The second Jersey paid $350 as a 3 mo. (actually, traded a hog and $150). Both are now gone. That Guernsey sure would have been tempting.

dun, thats a really good price for that guernsey cow and calf. I too, would have been tempted to get them.
Funny about those goats, I have said for years, I should be raising goats instead of cattle. I might have already tried it had it not been for my fencing, and my wife. She dont like goats, even though shes married to an old one..

The goat price was about half of what it should have been, but they're only a couple of months old too. The norm seems to run adout 85 cwt for a 85-100 lb goat.

Goats have been down here for most of two years. Between drought conditions and most goat people buying a larger percentage of their hay, most have tried to get out, which has flooded our local market.

If the demand for goats has come from the latino community, it may be down because many of the mexican population has headed back to Mexico, due to the loss of jobs in the country, especially the loss of all the construction jobs.

From the people I talked to the decline in goat proces has just started within in the last month or so. Could just be a seasonal slump or it could be the tightening of the economy. We don;t have much of a latino population around here.

I hope it hits here soon. We're busting at the seams but mostly from people up north. The radio stations are now calling us the "West-O-Plex" since we are not in the Metro-Plex but it seems like it. There's buildings going up all over the place. We don't dare ask, "What next?"

The Boer Goat market has dropped drastically here in past 2 years. Everyone jumped on the bandwagon & now they are a dime a dozen (so to speak)!
I have a customer in Ma that shipped summer born calves last week.

I went to a sale in SW Missouri Dec 27 and no one wanted to bid. I bought 40 cows out of one herd, mixed 3-7 year old 1200 lb springers for 635 per head. Could have bought cows with month old calves for the same price, but didnt want to mess with calves getting sick in the wet cold. Paid 55 cents per pound for some weaned 440 lb red steers. It was terrible what the market was.
When the sales opened up after New years, calves were 15-40 dollars per hundred higher and cows 100-250 higher. I sold those red calves for 95 cents per pound and they averaged almost 175 dollars per calf more than I gave for them and only held them 10 days. I also sold a large group of calves I had been holding for a better market. They brought an average of 20 dollars per hundred more than they would have in December. There was no skill involved, just blind luck. I have never seen the market jump so high in one week, but I have seen it fall that quickly.
No one I know thinks the market rise will last, but I hope they are wrong.

There are feedlots within 200 miles of where you sell and major slaughter plants within similar distances. When I sell calves in Alabama, they are going to ride 100-200 miles to an order buyer's yard. After they get sorted with loads from other stockyards, they are going to ride 700 -1100 miles to a feedlot. By that time, they will have been mixed two or three times and their health status is going to be significantly challenged. In Florida, add another 400 miles of trucking. Obviously, if I were a Kansas feedlot I might pay a little more for calves that only rode 3 hours versus Florida calves who have been on a truck for days. I see the Tulsa price quoted on here pretty regularly and I know that our barns are going to be something less than that.
