I am planning on visiting a reputable Angus farm to purchase a bull. I purchased one three years ago from the same location for $1200 and the asking price is now $1800. I am using the bull on a commercial herd and I told the owner I am looking for a similar bull ( moderate to easy calver with above average WW) Is this the going rate or am I getting taken.

You can't get taken if you don't play the game.

But tell me what else you bought three years ago that you can buy for the same price today? Gasoline, car, food, insurance, fertilizer? The cost of raising this bull is probably up considerable from three years ago. That said, there are lots of Angus bulls for sale around the country. Do some shopping and compare. Good luck....

Seems like he would give you a deal since you just bought one from him 3 years ago.. but, things have risen in cost. And, just as long as you get your pick, and he doesnt pick one for you.

How many cows are you going to turn out with this bull? How long do you plan to keep the bull? Remember he is half of your herd. You get what you pay for good genetics are not or should they be cheap. Even sale barn bulls are bringing 1200 plus here.

I had a guy on my place last week he looked at the bulls then asked the prices. His comment was I had not planned to spend this much but this is the bull I want. He will be happy in the long run because he picked the best one in the group.

Use a reputable breeder and remember they have to feed their families too.

Know your bulls....You should still have the EPDs from your current bull. Compare then to the bull he is selling you. Your first bull may not have been expected to do as well. If you dont know your EPDs go to angus.org. Check out the sire and dams EPDs as well. You can look them up by registration nubmer on angus.org. Many things factor in to bull selling. Demand for one's bulls, really drives prices. The new bull may be better and will really increase your herds quality. Typically folks say a bull is 50% of your herd. I think of my bull as 75%. His legacy will be on your farm for more than one generation.
You can always post the EPDs on this site and folks will tell you what they think. A picture of the bull is good. Sometimes the difference in a guy selling you a bull for 1200 to 1800 is age. If he sold you an 18 month old and now your buy a 2 year old.

I always figured 3 to 4 calfs, Also don't forget there are a lot of other bulls to put the WOW on a set of commercial girls.

I went to an auction a couple weeks ago and a friend of mine purchased a bull by TC Freedom,DOB 10-11-05,tested etc..Paid $1175
Two C Stewart registered Angus auction.
Several Fall 2005 bulls were sold and none for more than $1200
I thought they went too cheap but its shows they are out there for $1200

I have been watching sale results from the breeder sales and it appears that bull prices are off $500-$600 from what they were a year ago. There are a lot of decent bulls out there for $1200-$1500.

Burno is right on with this.

But, if you select a good Angus bull you get the ....."UUH WOW". Thats better.

Points to ponder;

""What Is A Bull Worth?
By Dr. Wayne Wagner, WVU Extension Livestock Specialist

A bull is very much the same, in terms of genetic input, to a beef herd as a bag of seed corn is to a farmer who raises corn. There is one large difference, which is that the seed corn producer provides both the male and female side of the equation ( the fertilized egg in cattle ) and therefore determines the genetic input from both parents instead of just the male side when a beef producer decides on a bull to breed cows to. A bag of seed corn may cost from $60-120 and a bushel of corn is worth $2.00. What is a bull worth?

Some say a bull is worth 4 to 5 weaned calves or 2.5 to 3 fed cattle.

500 lb calf
Price/lb 4 head 5 head
.90 $1800 $2250
$1.00 $2000 $2500
$1.10 $2200 $2750
$1.20 $2400 $3000
$1.20 $2400 $3000

600 lb calf
Price/lb 4 head 5 head
.90 $2160 $2700
$1.00 $2400 $3000
$1.10 $2640 $3300
$1.20 $2880 $3600
$1.30 $3120 $3900

1200 lb steer
Price/lb 2.5 head 3 head
.80 $2400 $2880
.85 $2550 $3060
.90 $2700 $3240
.95 $2850 $3420 "

The above is interesting and corelates with an experience.

A local herdsman buys the cheapest bull he can find...with the stated attitude that..."he(the bull) produces nothing therefore isn't worth much". He plants 15-29 acres corn annually. He is known for takng a mag. glass to the co-op and examine the seed corn before purchase.

For mini herds(5-20) ...find a neighbor(s) to join in on the investment so that all can have the use of a good bull with minimum investment. Remember a good bull requires no more maintenance than a bad bull from the sale barn.
