Well well well...went 5 for 5 at our preg checks today. TAI, checked at just 33 days so we will re-check again when we do the preg checks for our second batch, for which we just stated protocol.
3 of the 5 were AI'd to angus bull Sunrise (heifer sexed). 4 of the 5 were mature cows, one a first-timer that (assuming the pg sticks) will deliver a exactly age 2.
Given our woeful hay (non) season, this was a bit of good news we needed

Thanks all! Looks like our AI tech was on a roll that day. We also gave them an extra hour or two (beyond our usual) between steps 2 and 3 of the 7 day protocol. But probably it was just luck! Had them checked at 33 days so will recheck again.

What is your protocol?

We use the TAI (Timed AI) 7 Day CO-Synch With CIDR: http://www.selectsires.com/resources/fe ... n=20170404

As you can see, it's basically:
Insert CIDR and administer GnRH injection
One week later, remove CIDR and administer PG (prostaglandin, eg Lutalyse)
THEN (and here's where it gets tricky): about 58* hours later (give or take), do the AI and administer another GnRH shot.

*As you will see on the linked docs for TAI, the recommended time varies from 60-66 hrs (for cows) and 54hrs (+/- 2 hrs) for heifers. We have an AI tech come, so we do the heifers and cows at the same time, and try to aim for somewhere in the middle. As you can see, the time between the second and third step can ostensibly vary from 52 hrs (the minimum for heifers) to 66 hrs (the max for cows). We try to AI around 58 hrs, on the theory that it meets in the midpoint between the max for heifers (56 hrs) and the min for cows (60 hrs). I think others may go a bit longer than this, from what I've read on here. And no matter how strictly one adheres to a protocol, the results sure do nonetheless vary!

Exactly what we do with good results. A little expensive, but pays off when they take like that. Congratulations.
Thanks! Do you wait 58 hrs, or a bit more?
It would be hard for us to go longer than 58 hrs, given the tech's schedule and ours. (We do steps 1 and 2 early am on consecutive Sats., then he comes as late in the day Monday as possible to AI. As daylight hours shrink in the fall, it becomes even harder to keep to the ~58 hrs but we try hard).

We do 60 for mature cows. Have yet to do heifers with the protocol, will probably go a few hours less for them.
