Help Support CattleToday:

Pretty limited in numbers of animals per drinking post though... OK for small numbers. The other thing is, it operates JUST like a yard hydrant, with a weep hole to drain down the riser pipe inside the insulated "post". The animals open the "hydrant" to fill... and when they let up on the paddle, it closes the hydrant and opens the weep hole. Anything in the cup has to drain down through that weep hole then... like dirt and grass and debris that the animal may have had in their mouth. I don't have one of these... so I'm not speaking from experience... BUT, my concern would be that the weep hole will eventually become plugged, and the pipe won't be able to drain down, and at that point, the riser pipe will automatically freeze up, and burst with the ice expansion. They don't mention anything about that potential on their website... maybe because it's never been an issue? Or maybe because these only get used/installed in "limited number of animal" operations?

The other thing will be the amount of water that has to drain down, if you've got alot of animals drinking. A yard hydrant is opened and closed only a few times maybe a day, whereas this will drain down after EVERY ANIMAL. You'd better have a really good drainage field installed to take that water away... unless of course, you go by the manufacturer's recommendations, and only have a limited number of head drinking on it (they say "up to 25 of cattle" per post).
