10 Shocking Mistakes People Make When Entering The Farming Space.
A must read
1. Building a mansion at the farm.
- you do not need a fancy house when starting your farming enterprise unless you intend to set up an unproductive rural home. Let business lead not comfort and pride to show off on Facebook.
2. Starting big without experience.
- only the grave starts on top, every other thing starts small. Starting small is not a weakness but a strategy. There are too many advantages of starting small.
3. Producing without the market.
- it's safer to 'produce for the market, than to market the produce'. That's one of the advantages of starting small. Let the real customer guide you. The market is your greatest teacher.
4. Working on assumptions.
- untested assumptions are very costly. Never put a big budget on assumptions. Thank me later
5. Hiring unqualified and nearest people.
- only a fool will entrust an $20k investment in the hands of an uneducated relative or some cheap guy or illiterate couple desperately looking for a place to stay. If farming is a business, then get trained people. Never hire anyone you can't fire! Unless it's urgent avoid relatives! Hire the best you can and don't trust them
6. Setting too short time frames.
- farming is not a get-rich-quick-scheme. This is the reason many backyard broiler farmers never make any money. Although broilers are ready in 6 weeks, your money is usually ready after 2 years of consistency. Get in with a plan to evaluate at least 3 times in 5 years! Anything less will not give you an informed perspective.
7. Investing in infrastructure without production.
- your business is farming not buildings. Invest in stock not structures. If possible have temporary structures for your goats or chickens. Too many people build structures for $10k and buy stock (like chickens) for $200. Very unwise! Start with the cheapest or free structures but with the best breeds/variety of what you want to grow

#8. Letting experts into your head to overcomplicate what is really very simple. "Keep it simple, stupid" works a lot better than making it complicated and expensive.

I know FB people are the kewlest thing since white rice and hightop sneakers but Here's what lots of us get when we click on your facebook picture:

Who wants to open a farcebook account just to look at someone else's pictures and vids?

Show of hands please.

(and $20,000 to start a farm endeavor? Not on this planet.)

His FB links work for me. Even when I am NOT logged in to FB. Even when I am not logged in to CT. Pictures and videos both work. That is on a laptop. Maybe click on that little x on that popup.

My vote is for JLTrent to keep on posting. I like his posts.

We had 8" of rain this past week and a little snow this morning and everything is getting back to normal. The rest of the week doesn't sound good.

I have, on my Lenovo laptop. An image comes up momentarily then the popup returns wanting me to log on or register with fb.
You may not be logged on, but you do tho, HAVE a FB account and because of it, undoubtedly have session and persistent cookies placed in your cache BY FB so it (FB) instantly recognizes that you have an account. Not everyone does.
I like most of his posts too, especially his post on chainsaws, but not his posts for fb.

Cows snuck under the water gap that I ain't fixed since the flood a couple or three weeks ago. I tricked them with an empty feed sack. I already know I'm going to hell for that, but it was sortuv an emergency situation.

After I got them all safe and secure back into the 30 acre feedlot, I was driving back to the house and decided to get some shots of "chemtrails":ROFLMAO:

This is what you will see.

You are ignoring content by this member.

Ya do post an awful lot of internet stuff without much actual conversation. Expecting everyone to appreciate the links they have little if any interest in... and yet they have to scroll through it continuously... shouldn't be too surprising.

I'd invite you to write about things that matter to you. Original thoughts let us get to know you.

Thanks for the advice Travl as I do post a lot of pictures from various sources including a lot of my on.

I like seeing @jltrent posts!!
I don't have FB but I can see them just fine!
Not even sure why anyone is going on about it.
Agree. Amazing to me the idea that some seem to have - looks like trying to tell people what to post, how to post, when to post. There are some things and some people and some content here that might be candidates for "ignore". But jltrent is not one of those. He is a very talented guy. And maintains his equipment second to none. And been here a long time with lots of posts with good content. And apparently is way more polite than some others.

I really don't know much about you. If you'd care yo say anything about your place, your animals, your business model, I'd love to hear it.
Here is a little about myself. I currently have 81 cows with calves and 20 heifers around 700# to make cows. My wife and I own 337 acres. Farmed all my life, retired from juvenile social work/corrections.

Here are some pictures I took today of cattle I have around the house in three places. A lot are gone to water so not in the pictures.

Nice place. Nice buildings. I'd bet the cattle are every bit as nice, but hard to tell considering the distance. I really think the east has the prettiest landscapes. God's country.

Here is a picture of a TS420 concrete saw I repaired today that about kicked my azz, but back together and running like new. Did a pressure test, new carb, belt, fuel lines, and new oil seals. Worked on this junk for 30+ years and this took some effort. I wish I had a picture when I had this a part as it was a pile of parts.

Decided to add a few more pictures of saws etc. I have repair which now several thousand counting all I have repaired for myself and others.

You do concrete for a living? Or small engine repair for a side hustle?
