Pollen trouble

Pollen is severly irratating my eyes while mowing. I have never had pollen bother me before but this year pollen has been swelling my eyes shut. It feels like someone through sand in my eyes. Has anyone tried goggles? I know it would look funny but I'll do about anything to keep my eyes from itching and swelling so bad.

When I was a young lad I had the same problem. I have since outgrown it and with the event of cabs and air conditioning it is no longer a problem.

As a young fellow I used wear a mask and goggles when I cut, raked or baled. We used to put the darned small squares in the barn, so I wore it when stacking as well.

Worked for me then - but you will need the entire combo - what you breathe in will help irritate from the inside of your sinuses.

There is a new type of hard hat out with a full face shield. It is attached to a small filter system that hangs from your belt. The fan in the filter system blows the clean air up a tube and into the top of your hat - creating a cooling effect and blowing filtered air down over your face and out the bottom of the shield - preventing dust and pollen from entering.

It runs a couple of hundred bucks - but for those with pollen and dust allergies it really appears to help when working in poor conditions. Made for grain workers and poultry barns and so on. probably work for you as well.

All in all a light and comfortable wear - tried one on at a farm show last summer. You might hunt one of them down.

Take care,

Bez

Get yourself a good pair of swimmers goggles, I found out they work alot better than safty glasses which will still let the dust get in. Swimmers goggles come in various sizes, the smaller ones work best for me. I don't care what I look like as long as I'm not getting crap in my eyes.

Some of the new safey glasses wrap around and seal out dust very well. It probally would do a good job on the pollen also. Those may be worth a try before going with goggles. Heck I wouldn't care what I looked if it made me feel better. I wear a cartridge resperator while spraying, I hate to breath in all of those chemicals. It does interfer with my chewing tobacco though.

Swimmers goggles huh? Sounds good. I've been living off Benedrhyl for the last two weeks. My MIL says that people with allergies are really suseptible to pecan pollen right now. I believe it. That and mold. Don't know where that mold is, but I guess it's bad. I guess anything that blooms right now is going to make people with allergies go nuts.

denogginizer, I bet you are mowing those little yellow flowers that come up in the pastures where the soil holds moisture well. I have been mowing for the last three weekends and am having the same problem. At one time my eyes were burning so bad that I thought it was the exhaust from the tractor. I would have to squeeze my eyes shut and keep them closed for a pretty good while. I have never had an allergic reaction to anything. After looking at the mower, it was covered in yellow pollen. It made me wonder how much of that was in my eyes, nose and lungs. I am going to try a mask tomorrow. I read where it said that the flowers were toxic to cattle. I wonder if the pollen from these flowers is really bad too. I hate wearing masks on a warm day. I hate those little yellow flowers too.

You might want to consider trotting down to your local drug store and picking up a box of Claritin. It does a pretty good job of negating outdoor allergies. Non-drowsy, also.
