I looked around the archives a bit but I couldn't lay my hands on any poetry topics. I can't believe that as much talent as we have in this forum we don't have a few "cowboy" poets. Anyone?

My neighbor makes me look like the amatuer that I am at poetry. Search drycrikjournal. I enjoy writing stuff that's a little more down to earth but he is absolutely a master of poetry and a good lifelong cowman.

about the only poetry I have ever read was on the walls of restrooms. Gotta do something while you're "resting".

Most everyone has seen this so I apologize, hopefully the ones that I irritate have me on their foe list and won't see it

Cross, did you work on that one more since the last time you posted it? It was good before but it seems like it flows better than I remember. I like the artwork to.

Love the line "A fast horse but a faster rope"

With much trepidation...

Light fades out
A small campfire
Cowboys settle down.
In the still, still night
On the prairie vast
Miles from any town

Earth meets sky
Coyotes howl
Lonely sounds abound
Then dawn approaches
Sunlight comes
Miles from any town

Cattle moving
Onward north
Grass is mostly brown
Weather's changing
It might be rough
Miles from any town.

Day is gone
Miles closer
Hooves still on the ground
Tomorrow will end it
Whiskey drinking
Cattle drive's in town.

I might as well throw one in.

I caught up an old horse I had retired for my youngest daughter to start roping on.

It goes like this:

He looked at the tack with an inquisitive eye
Kinda stood back today, must have been shy

Two long years he'd been kicked out on grass
After today there'd be no more free pass

The pad, the bit, they'd lost their familiar smell
Would he remember the routine, only time would tell

Front gert, then back all screwed down tight
Took that old chain bit like he'd done all his life

Left foot in the stirrup, leg up an over, then hunt for the right
Never a step, he wasn't even tight

Retirement is over, there is a new job to do
A little red headed girl has plans for you

When the buckles she's won are now tarnished and green
They'll still shine bright in an old mans dreams

Great poem. I could smell the breakfast and hear the sounds as I read. Good job!
