Hi there,

I am having a problem with one of my calves. She is fifteen months old. Her symptoms are:

  • Losing weight
  • Too Fast Metabolism (the more she eats the more weight she loses)
  • Extremely bad smelling Diahorrea
  • Blood in her diahorrea
  • Very bad breath
  • No longer socialising
  • Never chews her cud
  • We had her in a different property and since she came back with the other calves she has developed this sickness/disease

Does anybody know what this is and/or how to cure it?
Please help, if she is not diagosed or cure she will have to be put down, as we have other calves with us.

Hello,

Sound like your calf has Calf Diphtheria it affects the throat and the tongue if the tongue is a little swollen and she has a wheez when breathing then it is most likely diphtheria, treat it with a Broad spectrum anti - biotic such as Penicillin ( ultrapen or propercillin) or any kind of pennicillin for cattle you can get your hands on give it to her for around 10 days. If you reply back to me with the estimated weight of her i can help better with a treatment.

cheers
Damien
