pasture

Help Support CattleToday:

At what stage do you plan to graze the barley? While it is green? After the heads are out? After it has ripened?

I would talk to your local county extension office and see what types of grass you have in your area. They could also tell you what would be the best for grazing.

We graze our cattle on both crested wheat grass and native. Now that the most of our harvest is over we will run them on the stubble strips and let them eat up any spilled grain and grass that is on the edges of the fields.

Barley would be best to be grazed on, IMO, after it's been silaged, to let them pick at the residue.

I think it'd be too rich if you let them at it before you take it off, especially at the head stage.

So either talk to your local ag rep or pick a different pasture grass like timothy or brome, wheatgrass, or orchardgrass
