Been seeing where they want to dictate what we can have our kids do on the farm. This has got me thinking and made me wonder how much if any jurisdiction OSHA has on our farms. In my state we don't have to get a building permit to put up a barn so can OSHA come on our property and dictate?

Farm work is dangerous but kids playing is more dangerous. No kidding. Think back on the crazy things you did as a kid and decide what was more dangerous.

you know playing is dangerious.i remember as a kid making big piles of loose hay in friends hay barns climbing up on the haystacks an jumping into the piles.all the times i took the 3 wheeler mudding.taking off popping a wheelie on the 3 wheeler.

My Dad had me driving a tractor when I was five. John Deere 50 and she is still in the family. If they wanted to look out for kids safety then they need to dictate them low slung hanin off their butt cheeks pants that they can barely walk in!
Anyway wondering how much OSHA can legally mess with farmers?? Such as drive by and stop and say that hard hats have to be worn etc....

Also, I believe the proposed rules are only for hired help not family members.

OSHA is responsible for enforcement of work place rules. If you are hiring workers you are subject to an OSHA inspection. However, with the number of inspectors OSHA has it would take them 2000 years to inspect every work place. You are much more likely to get an OSHA inspection following a reported injury or death of an employee. The rules proposed by the labor department mostly cover hired help but some of the rules, mostly the livestock rules do apply to all children including family.

Thanks for the opinions, I wasn't asking about child labor...it got me thinking about the OSHA thing. Wondering if OSHA can legally mess with farmers. Example: farmer is building a barn using his sky track OSHA stops and wants to write him a ticket cuz he isn't harnessed into the man cage. Yay or nay?

We would all have a lot more money in our pocket and be a lot happier if the government would get out of our lives and do their job, strictly as it written in the constitution.
The Nanny State/ Green movement is an organized attempt to destroy this country.
Our second admendment rights are under attack.
Christianty is under attack I totally agree with Perry on this one.
You can watch the media push Butt Buddy Bob or Tommy Turbin and they will sing your praise's and force their propaganda into your home every night.
Our schools are teaching socialism and marxist theories.
If you don't believe that turn on your tv this morning and there media will instuct you in the proper thinking.
I could rail on and on about lost liberties.

This country is rapidly approaching a turning point of success or destruction.
The divide today is deeper than it was 150 years ago.

THE ONLY POINT I WOULD DISAGREE WITH YOU ON IS THAT I FEAR WE HAVE ALREADY ROUNDED THE CORNER AND ARE ON THE DOWNHILL SLIDE.

I also agree completely, but to find a solution it will take someone with a huge set. Think about all the people who would be out of a job in just the IRS, if we went to a flat tax system. Not just IRS employees, but CPAs, tax attorneys, even the seasonal preparers, and this is just one small part of the fed. Maybe streamlining agencies to reduce redundancies, how many federal law enforcement agencies do we have, and could they be consolidated to reduce overhead and personnel expenses? I realize this would do nothing for liberties we have lost or are in peril of losing, but I think it is possible if we would downsize government, a side benefit would be to downsize the intrusions. Build our roads, protect our borders, enforce our federal laws. Leave the rest to the individual states that have their own agencies to tend to issues.

Well I am a hard and fast state righter ......

but we lost the war over that nearly a 150 years ago....

the modern liberals will tell you all day long it was just about slavery.....but the war was over states rights.

federalism won.

now we have federalism unionized and subsidized by the nanny state.

I would agree that goverment can be a real pain, and should stay out of our lives. However when it comes to safety, what would you be saying if it is you child that is hurt or injured.

Bigbull started a tread high lighting some dangers not long ago. The rules may be wrong or over the top, but in my opinion even if it saves only a few childeren from a sad fate then it has to be not a bad thing.

We all work and raise childeren in the most dangerouse industry there is. Yes childeren love it too, but we do need to keep them safe as well.

A parent has a real responsibility when a child is working for you. Teach safety from the beginning as priority #1. I was plowing with an 8N Ford at a very early age. I never felt I was in danger and I was so freaking proud. You can't take that away from kids. Yes, a few kids will get hurt and a few will die. It's tragic when that happens. Does it outweigh the ten or hundreds of thousands of kids who don't get experience working? I'll say the benefit outweighs the risk. We can't keep them in bubbles.
Since this is Cattle Today, most injuries in the cattle biz seem to be old men feeding Bulls. Does the Labor Dept need to regulate that? I call overturned tractors "old farmers disease". The old guys want every foot of that pond bank mowed, they forget the loader is still rising when hauling hay on the front end, they screw up in general. No one should have to do the dangerous work farmers commit to do, but it's going to get done and kids, when they get some experience, are better at it than old guys.

Just because Lee gave up don't mean we have to.

Liberals don't like talking about Maryland as slave state and Federal troops shooting civilans in the streets of Baltimore.
