We have a very small group of cows. On Saturday morning we found that one of them (approx. 10y/o) had had her calf overnight. Both appeared well. Sunday morning we found the mother had died sometime during the night. We have no idea what could have happened to her. No indication of a prolapse or anything. Any ideas?? Now we have our first bottle fed calf. Any pointers? Also how/when does one attempt to introduce the calf to the herd? Thanks.

It's too late now to have her posted, but check with a vet to see if he/she/it has any ideas. Feed only high quality milk replacer per the directions on the bag. We generally leave all calves with the herd. The dynamics of the herd will indicate how to reintroduce the calf. Some other cow may claim the calf or it may become adept at sneaking meals from others. If no one claims the calf, start feedingcalf starter within a few days.

she must have had some kind of complications during birth (which is kind of odd/rare for a cow that age) that may have caused her to bleed internally?
