One factor that is very important in avoiding calving problems but seems to be totally ignored is exercise for the gestating cow or heifer. Females should be forced to move by having feed and water supplies as far apart as possible. Don't let em lay around in a small pen.

I don't know if there is any research on this subject, but I totally agree that they should have exercise. I don't 'force' the issue, but cattle naturally have to walk to get to water & feed & get out of the wind.
