old cattle dog with joint problems...glucosamine/condrotin not working anymore

11year old german shepard. on glucosamine/condrotin for few years and worked. giving double dose tablets now, not working anymore, and wondering if there is something else? will contact vet for pain relief if any, but they will want me to bring him in. anyone with similar experience? my best friend and still tries to travel with me and would like to have his final months with less pain. heard of naxoprophen/etc . thanks for any info

Ester C is supposed to help with pain and help rebuild the soft tissue that cushions the joints.

Do you mean naproxen? Dogs are very sensitive to naproxen. Us humans take that as Aleve. The human dose might kill your dog. Many people assume that the otc pain pills they take will be suitable for their pets. But often not the case with NSAID's. Best to see a vet. They know about treating dogs. They may prescribe Rimadyl.

We've got a 13 yo Border Collie with joint pain. Vet has given her a couple shots but they only really help for a week or so. She was an outside dog until the wife moved her inside back in February. Now she won't hardly go outside lol. Probably saved her life. I'll be following this thread.

I asked. Galliprant not for humans. FDA approved for dogs only. Per the internet, there is a similar drug for people, but it was pulled from the market after too many people died taking it.

We had a dog with terrible hip dysplasia, who also had some kind of clotting disorder-developed a GI bleed with Rimadyl/carprofen. Gallaprant was new (about 8 years ago), but the vet tried it and it kept her going pain free for about 5 years. We had done adequan injections about 2 yeas prior to that-they were helpful also but pricey.

Our dog has had 3 major knee surgeries on her back legs and has had her right front leg removed. She is taken Previcox and we give her adequan injections. She was taking gabapentin but I'm not really sure it helped so we stopped it. The Previcox is an NSAID and she is on a nexium because she takes it regularly. Not sure if that is helpful but thought I would share.

I was just thinking, if the source of the pain is osteoarthritis then Pentosan injections might be a good option. Your vet would be the one to ask about that though of course.

As I understand, Gabapentin is used for seizures, convulsions, anxiety and pain by causing an effect on the nerve cells. Galliprant is used for dog osteoarthritis and targets pain and inflammation. I suspect the various drugs mentioned in this thread were all appropriate for those individual animals. But I think that the variety of drugs used may also indicate the need for a vet to examine the specific animal including its history in order to select the most effective treatment for that animal.
